Historical Analysis - Essay ExampleThese literary licenses do not majorly diminish the utility of the work as a historical record. To the contrary they condense and encapsulate British soldiers experiences. The book proves to be both intellectually engaging and technically satisfying, while not compromising on history. This essay will argue that while accommodating the imperatives of the novel form, Regeneration does not compromise on historical veracity.Firstly, an attractive feature of the novel is the elbow room in which it synthesizes real events across the realms of society, politics and the battlefield. For example, the renowned Dr. W.H.R. Rivers was the incumbent army psychiatrist at the Craiglockhart War Hospital during the war. It was true that he attended to poet Siegfried Sassoon as one of the patients. Sassoon had been diagnosed with shell-shock - what in modern parlance would be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). But there was a political conspiracy slow this event . Earlier, Sassoon had openly protested against the war and conscientiously objected to participating in it. Understanding the power and reach of a public intellectual like Sassoon, the powers that be sought to spelunk his credibility by attributing a mental illness to him. But this would prove to be a blessing in disguise in retrospect, as Sassoon was equal to mentor and inspire Wilfred Owen at Craiglockhart, where the latter was recuperating from war-related stress. Indeed, Owen would go on to overtake Sassoon as a legend of war poetry. These are real historical events that watch shaped twentieth century culture, especially literary and political discourse. T cellB cell collaboration in the immune response to infection Essay
T cellB cell collaboration in the immune response to infection - Essay ExampleIt is referred to as non-specific because it broadly attempts to stop the spread of all types of invaders. (Kuby, 1996)The latter type consists of two categories cell-mediated immunity and antibody-mediated (humoral) immunity. It is the stronger one of the two types but takes several hours or even days to travel fully activated. It is referred to as specific because it responds differently to every other foreign pathogen. (Hariharan, 2006)Lymphocytes, a class of White Blood Cells, are a vital discriminate of the acquired immune system, being responsible for the whole reaction. They are produced in the primary lymphoid organs and then migrate to the secondary lymphoid organs where they make do antigens of foreign bodies by the help of membrane receptors specific to the antigens. Two major classes of lymphocytes take part in the acquired immunity B-Cells (B lymphocytes) and T-Cells (T lymphocytes). (Alber ts, Bray, Lewis, Raff, Roberts, Watson, 1994), (Linnemeyer, 1993)Precursors of T-cells originate in the foetal coloured and yolk sac during the embryonic life, and migrate to the bone marrow after birth. The stem cells then enter the thymus by chemo taxis and develop into T-cells which are after specialized into CD4+ (helper) cells or CD8+ (cytotoxic) cells. (UNC-SOM, 2004)MaturationOn entering the thymus, T-cell precursors (prothymocytes) develop into T-cells that indicate both CD4 and CD8 molecules on their membranes and then later continue to indicate either CD4 or CD8 molecules. The cells having antigen receptors for self proteins are destroyed by aptosis (programmed cell death). This prevents autoimmunity. On the other hand, the cells having antigen receptors that do not react with self MHC proteins are also killed as this causes the decisive selection of T-cells that do react with MHC proteins. (Stadnyk, 2007) Functions of the MHC proteins include positive selection of T-ce lls as well as presentation of foreign body antigens to them. (NIAID, 2003)General FunctionThe avail T-cells activate lymphocytes called macrophages and other T-cells involved in the immune response, and aid B-cells in producing antibodies by alerting them and determining the type of antibody to be produced. (NIAID, 2003)2) B-CellsOriginPrecursors of B-cells migrate from the foetal liver to the bone marrow where they remain and undergo maturation throughout the adult life. They do not require thymus for their development. (Levinson, 2004)MaturationDevelopment of B-cells takes personate in two phases antigen-independent phase & antigen-dependent phase. In the 1st phase, stem cells of the marrow differentiate into B-lineage and progenitor B-cells. The progenitor B-cells proliferate into precursor B-cells which requires the microenvironment supplied by the surrounding stroma. Cells of the stroma blowhole numerous cytokines, most importantly IL-7, which help in the maturation process . Further

Lloyds Banking Group Integration Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1
Lloyds Banking Group Integration - Essay ExampleOne of the outcomes of the trapping Bubble Bust and the concomitant recession was the recognition of a pressing need for industry self-regulation bolstered by commensurate statutory and institutional reforms (Global finance 2009). Especially, the monetary markets in Europe today are governed by a general agreement and consensus as to the inevitability of internal and external monitoring of the banks and financial institutions (Global Finance 2009). The banks in Europe are increasingly under the state and stakeholder driven pressure to affect structural and remuneration reforms that positively discourage and restrain native risk taking and promote productivity and efficiency. Lloyds Banking Group, which performed miserably during the subprime mortgage debacle, is no way different from any other bank, as far as the need for restructuring and going lean is concerned (Fleming and West 2010). This essay intends to analyze as to varied or ganizational structures that the Lloyds Banking Group could resort to and the accompanying dish outrial, cultural and performance related to aspects associated with the proposed options. Lloyds Banking Group It goes without saying that Lloyds Banking Group is indeed a prominent and important British Financial Institution. Lloyds Banking Group came into existence, after Lloyds TSB acquired HBOS in 2009. The British Government commands surface to a 41 percent stake in the organizations shareholding. Lloyds Banking Group comprises of four business divisions that are Retail Banking, Wealth & International, Wholesale and indemnity (Lloyds Banking Group 2010). The bank has business interests and operations scattered around a significant part of the world, including Asia, Middle East, US and Europe (Lloyds Banking Group 2010). Until now, to sell, promote and manage its highly diversified range of financial services and products, the group has predominantly relied on a divisional model, which is primarily a vertical structure, with its advantages and the accompanying bureaucratic arrangements, organizational hassles and inflexibility. Lloyd Banking Groups behemoth size is what worries the regulatory bodies, organizational management and the common and institutional investors (The economist 2010). Even as per some of the unprogressive estimates, Lloyds Banking Group has a hold over say 1/5th to 1/4th of the overall UK market for mortgages, small business loans, personal loans, sell accounts and credit cards (The Economist 2010). Added to this, when one takes into consideration the Groups constrained borrowing options, Lloyd Banking Group qualifies to be called a task, which is still far from being over (The Economist 2010). No wonder, the Group is definitely in the need of a desperate restructuring job that boosts its organizational efficiency and profitability, thereby enabling it to assure sustenance with its peculiar(a) deposits and dried up borrowing source s. Need of Adopting the Right Structure It goes without saying that organizations and especially the financial institutions like banks are not static entities, but primitive structures that imbibe sustenance, support and nourishment from the external micro and macroeconomic environment and do react and respond to external and internal changes and stimuli (Earley 1997). It is this very ability of a financial institution to be sensitive to the economic and regulatory changes that ensure its success and viability in the long run. The busting of the

Children, especially infants, will grow closer and more attached when the parents keep showing their affections through loving and caring contacts like when these parents change their diapers, hold them, comfort them, or talk to them. Marginal revenue in market economies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 138
Marginal revenue in market economies - Essay ExampleThe first helping is the marginal revenue (MR), which is the extra service gained on top of the marginal pull in when the siding quantity is increased (Samuelson & Marks, 44). This means that every increase in output generates further revenue. The second component is the marginal cost (MC), which is the extra amount that is needed to produce an extra quantity (Samuelson & Marks, 45). Usually, this figure is constant for every additional unit of output. Thus far, the profit made by firms is arrived at by subtracting, marginal cost from the marginal revenue (MR-MC). The difference is what is called the marginal profit. Nonetheless, firms increase their profits when the additional MR equals the extra MC. Similarly, firms are said to maximize their profits when their average total cost (ATC) is at their lowest. Hence, it can be deduced that firms maximize their profits when MR equals MC, which also equals ATC (Samuelson & Marks, 47 ). Accordingly, this analysis is important for the excellence of market economies because it provides the firms with the most necessary empirical association in market economies. For one, it tells firms to first examine their basic goal, which is profit. This is derived from the difference between MR and MC. Secondly it informs firms that their decisions on prices and output quantity have the significant impact on their market profits (Samuelson & Marks, 31). Finally, it informs firms that they must make good decisions to balance their demand and cost curves if they are to maximize their profits at the lowest

Similarly, the final negative aspect which was noted was with regards to the level and extent to which I would sometimes become too detail oriented and misses the larger picture of the project or process which was being engaged with. Each of these previously discussed factors had both positive and negative impacts upon the way in which lam within the group was affected. As a result of my positive drive and ambition, I was often able to engender a high degree of positive attitude nad trust between my fellow co-workers. However, due to the previously discussed negative aspects, my co-workers were oftentimes not freely able to come to me and discuss their ideas or thoughts due to the fact that they oftentimes viewed me as somewhat inapproachable. In such a way, my strengths were oftentimes nearly or entirely cancelled out by the weaknesses that I exhibited. In such a way, both the strengths and the weaknesses that have been listed not only help me to seek to maximize the positives and minimize the negatives that are so oftentimes represented within the workplace and group dynamic, it also he lps to understand to a more full and complete degree the way in which aspects of positive sort affect and impact upon the negative exhibitions which have been discussed. Whereas each of the positive forms helped to illustrate a way in which group cohesion and goals were affected, the negatives underscored the way in which disunity, fear, and an overall lack of positive action was affected. As a function of analyzing each of these determinants, it has become apparent that the most important aspects that should be corrected are unavoidably with regards to the level and extent to which impatience and anger are exhibited within the group dynamic. The Truman Show Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Truman Show - Assignment ExampleThe film appropriately shows the dilemma of identity see by Truman as he wonders whether is life is real or is part of a staged drama, with its script written by other controllers. This dilemma which he experiences is part of the multiphrenia referred to by Gergen in many respects. First, the self population of Truman in his own life and the presence of a large audience watching Trumans activities through hidden cameras is a determinant of the fact that Truman has a multiple sense of self where star is himself and the other is the Truman being watched by the audience. Even the introduction around Truman is part of the staged reality based in the sets of Seahaven thereby creating an artificial world for Truman to dwell in. While every other character in the show is an actor, Truman is one who is just living his life like a supposedly normal individual, but which is a show for the world come to the foreside. Although Truman seems to be instead a popular character from the television show, it is important to understand that Truman himself has been isolated from the external world just as Gergen described is an implication of the inculcation of more(prenominal) and more individual values. Before being himself, Truman is put in front of others in the world making him an object similar to a commodity or a good that is understood in terms of its demand among the people. Gergen gives a critical thought on the set of interpretations made by the audiences who base their meanings out of some pre-knowledge gained through experience. Gergen has called this forestructure or perspective which is a set of prior understandings which enable an individual to derive meanings out of any textual or oral information. Since the same perspective has now adopted multiple forms, there has been an increase in the complexity of truth. This fact also introduces confusion as to concept of modestness within an individual. Although Truman is able to find his way out of the fake world he had been forced into. In many ways, Truman is living an ideal life one which is illusory and fake, and the way his life differs from an average human being largely lies in the perception of Trumans world.

Obesity is one of the leading preventable causes of death in the get together States. The oblige, Obesity in America Whats Leading the Epidemic? states that nearly one thousand heap are killed each day from obesity. Obesity is heedful by BMI or Body Mass Index. This measures how much body fat someone has based on their height and how much they weigh. The seed, Harvard Mens health Watch states that a BMI of twenty five or more qualifies as overweight and a BMI of thirty or more qualifies as obese. About 63% of Americans are considered overweight and about 31% are considered to be obese (Harvard Mens Health Watch 2012). These numbers are strikingly large. This word only focuses on the adults that are obese in the United States and doesnt focus much on the children. The children are what America should really be think on because some day they will make up bulk of the population. The most obese child in the world is Jessica Guade who is seven years doddery and weighs four cardinal and eighty two pounds. That is heavier than a majority o f wad in the entire world. Every single day she drinks ten thousand calories in Coca-Cola and consumes fifteen hamburgers. She cant even walk and gets around by rolling. How can a parent do this to their child? Are they afraid to say no or do they just not care about their childs health? This is what the American life is doing to children. These numbers will have-to doe with to go up and we will see more children like Jessica if nothing is done about this epidemic. American life is changing and people are adapting to new culture which is making them focus less on their weight and appearance. The main factors that contribute to the obesity outburst are the lack of exercise, notice way in addition much television, and alimentation likewise many foods that are gamy in calories and fat. With the changes in television and advertising on television, Americans crave things that they see on TV. When you are ceremony TV you will see countless fast food advertisements where they make th e food step so delicious and look like it was prompt in a five star restaurant. This is just one of the many tricks that advertisers use in order to get people to taint their products. The sad disclose is that most of the time it works. Americans see all of these advertisements on TV and all they want to do is go out and buy it. These days children are watching so much television rather than playing outside. Young children are the main target for some advertisers like McDonalds and Burger King. In all of their commercials they fork over images of children eating their food and it makes children want to go and get it. Not only are there a lot of commercials about fast foods, but there are commercials about snacks and drinks as well. According to M. Mello in their article, Federal Trade Commission Regulation of Food Advertising to Children Possibilities for a Reinvigorated Role, a majority of the food and drink advertisements on television are advertising things that are unhealth y for the human body to consume (Mello 2010).The amount of these advertisements is ridiculous and according to this article the FDA has had to start cutting the airing of a lot of them. Not only are the advertisements on TV a problem, but the amount of television that children watch is an even bigger one. These days kids would rather stay inner(a) and watch TV and play video games rather than vent outside and playing sports like the past generations. The video games of this generation have made it possible for children to virtually play any sport that they want instead of going outside and physically breaking a sweat and playing them. Television has made Americans so much lazier than they used to be. People dont get out of the house nearly as much as they used too. Instead of going out to the ballpark and watching baseball games, they just go out and buy big screen televisions and sit on their butts and watch them. Children look up to their parents and will adapt these kinds of ha bits from them. This is a huge reason why children are beseeming so obese in America. The amount of television that kids watch and how many video games they play has a direct correlation to the lack of exercise in America these days. To children, a videogame or cartoon show is much more appealing than running around outside and exercising. Also, the developing culture of America as a whole has added to the lack of exercise in Americans.Technology has simplified nearly every aspect of human life. Rather than walking everywhere like our ancestors did, everyone drives, or takes the bus, or does anything that keeps them from using up their energy and breaking a sweat. As the parents of children are doing this, their children adapt to that lifestyle and in discharge they end up doing the same thing and start to live the way that their parents live. In the old days you would see people walking all over the streets, but without delay that there are automobiles the streets are just lined with traffic. As cities are becoming more civilized and advanced, there are less and less places for people to work out, and for kids to run around and play outside. In the article, Contributions of Built Environment to Childhood Obesity by, T. Rahman, R.A. Cushing, and R.J. Jackson, it states that the neighborhood the child lives in has a huge equal on their health. For example, if there are bike paths and places to play outside and run around, the child will be more physically active, but if these things arent in place, then the child is more prone to stay inside and watch television and gain weight as a result of that (Cushing 2011). While watching television they dont have to get up to do anything anymore. Remote controls have changed the world. You can change the channel on the television, originate on and off the lights, and answer the phone right from your chair without getting up to do anything. The only thing that people have to get up to do is go and get more food from th e fridge. Less and less children are becoming involved in athletics and exercise. Going outside and running around is much less appealing to children then it used to be. Lack of exercise is a huge contributing factor to obesity and children and something needs to be done about it. Fast food is so easy, quick, and convenient. Most Americans live a lifestyle that is always on the move and always busy. It is very easy for them to turn to fast food and grab a quick meal before they go to work. Not only is it fast and easy, but there are so many fast food restaurants in the United States. In 1970 McDonalds operated close to one thousand establishments in 2002 nearly thirty-five thousand restaurants were being operated. An estimated two thousand new McDonalds are opened each year. That is the road that most Americans choose rather than trying to sit down and eat a pedestal cooked meal. That goes along with the laziness of Americans. In this article from CBS news Fast Food linked to Child Obesity, it states that Every day, nearly one-third of U.S. childrenaged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely packs on about six extra pounds per child per year and increases the risk of obesity (CBSNEWS 2010).Fast food is so much faster and easier than going to the grocery store and getting all the ingredients needed to cook a nice healthy meal for your family. Instead most parents resort to the greasy, salty, and fatty foods that fast food establishments have to offer. According to J.Harisss article Television Viewing and Unhealthy Diet Implications for Children and Media Interventions, Humans possess an born(p) preference for sweet, high-fat, and salty foods, and a reluctance to try unfamiliar foods (Hariss 2011).Although some fast food restaurants offer substitutions like how McDonalds offers apples instead of French fries, most people do not choose these substitutions.People are more concerned about taste then health and to them, greasy salty foods taste better than apples. The only time that children would choose to eat the healthier choice is when their parents are with them. According to M. Stutts in their article, victual Information and Childrens Fast Food Menu Choices, when children go into fast food restaurants alone, they will choose to eat whatever they want regardless of the fat content. When their parents went with them they influenced them to choose the healthier items on the menu (Stutts 2009). The problem with the items on the fast food menus is that they are full of calories. The recommended calorie intake for a thirteen year old child that weighs ninety pounds is about thirteen cytosine calories each day. A McDonlads cheeseburger happy meal with a low fat milk as a drink has approximately seven hundred calories. That is half of the amount of calories that is needed in one day. On top of that most children these days arent exercising at all and all of those calories turn straight into fat. Fast food in general is so unhealthy for your bod y and if it was cut out completely, the number of obese children would be reduced dramatically. in that location are so many factors that play into why children are becoming so obese, but eating too many foods that are high in calories and fat is the number one reason why they are so obese. Most people in the world worry about the way they look when they look in the mirror. They will do anything to make themselves look skinnier and make themselves look more attractive. Nobody every worries about what is going on inside of their body. Most Americans do not realize that being overweight or obese can have some serious negative health effectuateon the body. There are so many aspects of life that are affected by obesity. Your metabolism, health of your muscles, bones, organs, and other parts of your body can be greatly affected when you are at an unhealthy weight. In the article Obesity in America Large Portions, Large Proportions, the author talks about some of the health risks that ar e involved with obesity. Some of the health risks are coronary artery disease, heart attacks, high blood pressure, strokes, diabetes, many forms of cancer, osteoarthritis, fatty liver, and embossment (Large Portions, Large Proportions 2006).Obesity can ultimately lead to a shorter life span from the health risks. It is obvious from this article that there are some major health risks from obesity that can affect your body in a very negative way. It is important that people take care of their bodies so that they can live happy and healthy lifestyles. A huge part of the childhood obesity problem is that the children have no idea what they are doing to their bodies by not exercising and having unhealthy diets. The author of this paper had the opportunity to educate children on the proper nutrition and recommended hours of exercise daily through a service training project that was completed with the help of a middle school from their hometown. Service learning is defined as a method of teaching and learning that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities (What is Service-Learning, 2008).The author was given the chance to strengthen the community and swear young children about the dangers of obesity. The author did so by creating an informative brochure that the principle of Rosa Parks Middle School Dr. Donna Redmond Jones enjoyed and agreed to hand out to students around the school. The brochures were also made available in the health room where students can just come in and pick one up. In finish the service learning project, the author was able to gain a lot of acquaintance on obesity, more importantly the health risks and ways to prevent them. The author also gained the fulfillment that he had informed young students about these risks and was able to benefit the community. The service project was ultimately successful because the author was able to re-teach the knowledge that he had gained from research to the children that the research was about. The information that has been provided in this paper demonstrates how a lack of exercise, watching too much television, and eating too many foods high in calories and fat, has lead to the obesity epidemic that is in America today. The number of obese children in American is an absurd number. Children in America these days dont worry about their image and their weight as much as they used to. All they are worried about is what TV show they are going to watch next, what video game they are going to play, and what type of fast food they are going to eat today. The idea of going outside and exercising never crosses their mind. If parents gave their children a little motivation to get involved in sports and exercising, the number of obese children in America would decrease substantially. Parents dont motivate their kids because they are doing the same exact thing as them. Not only are there a lot of obese children in America, but there are an incredible amount of obese adults as well.Children are prone to learn from what their parents do and inherit the bad habits that they have. So therefor if a parent is eating fatty foods and sitting around watching TV all day, their children will do the same thing. There are so many health risks that can come from obesity that you would think people would be more worried about it. Do people not gestate attention to the warnings and health risks? Do they not really care about the way they look and the negative make that it can have on the body? The prevalence of technology in America has changed the world greatly. It has made things so much easier, but in turn it has made Americans so much lazier. Everything can be done from a seat on the couch without having to get up at all. Watching too much television, lack of exercise, and eating too many foods that are high in calories and fat are the three biggest factors that pla y into the amount of obese children these days, but there are a long ton of factors that play into why Americans are so overweight. Something needs to be done about this epidemic before we see more serious side effects from obesity.ReferencesLa Merrill, M., Birnbaum, L. S. (2011). Childhood Obesity and Environmental Chemicals. Show how Hardy responds to the death of his wife Essay Example for Free
Show how uncompromising responds to the death of his wife EssayIn the years after the death of his wife, Emma, in 1912, the main candid of robusts rimes was his wife and how he missed her and grieved her death. In his verses during this period he wonts a lot of euphemism, so that he neer actu anyy tells the reader his wife has died. However, the muscular smell of trouble and sorrowfulness he feels comes finished in every metrical composition. The first poem st verboten wrote after the death of Emma was The Going in celestial latitude 1912. This poem has a highschoolly regular rhythm and rhyme, with the important address often rhyming at the stamp out of the soak ups to bleed attention to them. The title of the poem is a euphemism for death, and he continues with these throughout the poem, victimisation phrases such as vanishing, close your term here and where I could non companion. This poem is written as if sturdy is addressing Emma.In the first stanza, g ay addresses and questions his dead wife, and gives a sense of what seems like anger and irritation towards her, that she gave him no hint that she was acquittance to die. He suggest she was incorporeal and didnt cargon about leaving him, and this institutes how he is grieving and perchance non mentation straight. He emphases her swift, quick death as she left with wing of cast down tho this imagery also suggests her beauty in his eyes and how much he leave behind miss her. straightaway he regrets he can non follow her and he knows he will not gain atomic number 53 glimpse of her ever anon. The start of the mho stanza reiterates how he did not know that Emma was going to die and once to a greater extent he shows his regret that he could never bid good-bye. His use of soft graves indicates his wish that he could give the softest call to say sayonara to her properly, and this is reinforced by his use of alliteration in the soft, wishful sounds of utter a wish for a word, while. These soft sounds argon then quickly replaced by the harsh reality of the situation, as courageous sees morning harden upon the wall. The rest of the stanza is concentrated on how much her death has affected him and more than than precisely how he did not know that it would affect him so much. The assonance in the gloominessy sounds of un conkd, unknowing reflects his modal value at this point, and again the rhyme draws attention to the important words in the poem unknowing..great going that he did not know how much her death would grieve him.The third stanza, like the first, starts with a question aimed towards Emma. He asks her wherefore she directs him leave the house and why he sees visions of her. Again, in that location is a sense of irritation as if it is her fault for causing him this suffering. audacious says that he imagines seeing her again and maybe that he is seeing hallucinations of her as he tells Emma., I think for a breath it is you I see.He tells us that then he realises it is not her, and becomes bitter and upset once again. The rhyming of darkening darkness.yawning blankness emphasises to the reader the huge emptiness he feels now that his wife is dead, and how her keeping is already gradually fade away from him, in the very(prenominal) way as the visions he experiences do as he gets closer. The exclamation mark at the decision of the stanza makes it seem as if he is shouting in frustration, at how much the experience sickens me.In the fourth stanza, daring changes into the past tense, and the poem becomes more cheerful as he remembers the judgment of conviction the two of them spent together. There is a large amount of imagery used in this stanza, which Hardy uses to show the beauty of his wife, and the strength of their relationship. The red-veined rocks epitomise the passion and love he felt for Emma. He says she was the swan-necked one, a statement of her beauty and he describes her riding on the beetling Beeny Crest with him, maybe a sign they were ingenious and free to do what they wanted to, and how this contrasts to his feelings now. In the last line of this stanza, Hardy changes his language from me and you to us, which shows how their relationship grew stronger and they grew to love each some other and be together more in the good times when life unrolled us its very best.Again, the fifth stanza starts with a question, precisely this time the whimsy is given that Hardy is talking to himself, and not addressing Emma. This stanza tells us how later on in their relationship Hardy and Emma did not speak. Hardy shows a huge amount of regret and sadness in this stanza, that he did not talk to her properly and that their relationship got weaker before she died. He then moves back to happier memories of the distant past, and describes them together in bright commencement weather a pathetic fallacy whereby the weather shows the mood at that time.In the final examination stanza of this poem Hardy appears to give up all apply and becomes resigned to the situation. He adopts a very conversational tone and uses caesura to show that he is talking, using colloquialisms such as well, well. In the last lines of the poem Hardy feels as if he will sink down soon into despair. These lines are directed at Emma, as he again tells her, but this time in stronger terms, that he did not know how her swift fleeingwould undo me so. He uses pause in the midst of the caesuras to increase the impact of each short statement. In The Haunter, Hardy writes the poem as if it was his dead wife talking to him. He imagines Emma can see him and feel his emotions as a means of consoling himself. However, the main emotions which come out of this poem are Hardys guilt and regret and, although he adopts his wifes voice, it is his emotions which come through strongly in the poem.He appears to be stamping grounded by memories, which may be the reason for the title of the poem. Alternatively, it could be that he sees his wife as a ghost haunting him. Each stanza has the same words rhyming at the end of every second line know.go.do. in that locationto. These are important as they show Hardys mains hopes about his wife that she knows everything hes doing and thinking, but the go shows he knows she has gone for ever and there is nothing he can do to go there and be with her.The poem opens with irony as Emma says he does not think I haunt here nightly, when he is writing the poem. This shows Hardy hopes she is there with him, but that he just cant see her but in reality he probably knows she is not really there and it is just wishful thinking. This line also starts the theme which continues throughout the stanza that Emma is endlessly there with him. The repetition of hover and hover reinforces this point. Hardy is creating ideas which he hopes his wife would have about him, as a way of comforting himself.Hardys feelings of guilt and regret come through strongly in the second stanza. He did not do many of the things he should when he had the chance and this is shown by the repetition of when I could in the first two lines of this stanza. Emma says how she would like to adjunction his journeys, which shows Hardy feels guilty that he didnt let her go with him when he went away, and now blames himself that they didnt spend enough time together. The voice of his wife tells us that he misses me more than he used to do which means he didnt realise how much he needed her when she was alive but now he knows that he did and he misses her even more. Emma is described as a faithful phantom, which suggests that she was loyal to him, and maybe that he was not as faithful to her. The alliteration is soft to suggest the graciousness and beauty of Emma.In stanza three, there is a large amount of imagery, as Emma tells us how she likes to accompany him to places. There is a strong sense of night time in the opening of this stanza, as dreamers, shy hares and night rook s are mentioned. Emma tells us she follows Hardy into old aisles, which show Hardy is still thinking about the past, which is all to him, because he is reminiscing the happy times when Emma was alive and with him, and he now thinks he will not get that cheer back. However, although she is his shade suggesting she is like his shadow and always with him she is always lacking the power to call to him. We get the sense that, although Hardy is trying to believe his wife is near him, he is upset and frustrated that he can and will never talk to her.In the final stanza of this poem, Hardy is trying to cheer himself up, as this is what he thinks his wife would want. The reader is told that if Hardy but sigh, Emma goes straight to his side. This shows that when Hardy is upset, he thinks of Emma to try to console himself. Hardy tries to make himself feel better by thinking that Emma would want him to be in gloom no longer. This show he wants to be happier but he cannot so now he has to thi nk Emma wants him to be happier as well. The Voice, also written in December 1912, is a much more eerie and less rhythmical poem than the first two. However, although there is less rhythm and structure to the poem, it still has a strong and continual rhyme. The title of the poem indicates that now Hardy can now take care Emmas voice and the poem is written in the first person, as Hardy reveals his feelings and memories. As The Voice opens, Hardy shows us his grief and sadness as he describes his wife as woman much missed. The sounds alliterate to draw attention to their importance right at the start of the poem, as this will be a continual theme throughout. The words call to me, call to me are repeated at the end of the first line and this give the impression that although she is calling to him, like an echo to show how her voice is fading away from Hardy, along with his memories of her. This repetition also gives the impression that Emma is insistent to reach Hardy and will not give up. Hardy informs us that Emma tells him she is not the same as she was when she changed from the one that was all to Hardy. Hardy believes Emma is saying to him that she is not now as she was when Hardy changed and maybe stopped loving her, but she is the same as she was when they were in love. This shows that this is how Hardy remembers Emma, when their day was fair and their life was better than when they started to split apart. In the last line, Hardy changes from using you and me to our to show that now he is thinking of them together and happy.Hardy then looks back to the past and his memories of his wife, and imagines a perfect image of her in his head. He sees the memory very watchly and includes a lot of detail to show this. He can remember her even to the original air-blue gown, which is a pleasant and cheerful colour, showing the mood in the memory. It is one specific memory he is thinking about and, as he sees it more clearly, Hardy becomes exited and shows this through the caesura of yes and the exclamation mark at the end of the line, as if he is becoming louder and more energised. The transition between stanzas is a change between Hardys happiness in the past and his grief now. The sounds change from joyous to heavy, as does the mood of the poem. The whole stanza is a question, asking if it is really Emma talking or just the wind that Hardy can hear, although the reader will know that Hardy knows the answer to his own question. The lassitude of the breeze is a pathetic fallacy of Hardys mood, and the words such as listlessness and wet mead are counterfeit as they are heavy and sound tired, as if now he knows that his wife is fading away from him. Hardy tells Emma she is being dissolved and dying away from him. This suggests he has realized her voice is not real and just in his mind and she will be heard no more again. The lines in the last stanza of the poem are shorter than those in other stanzas. This gives the impression that the poem is fa ding away on the page, as Emma is ebbing away from Hardys memories. This stanza shows Hardy is now resigned to the fact that he is never going to hear her voice again and does not really make sense, maybe showing Hardys tiredness. The pathetic fallacy of leaves round me falling gives an impression of things dying and coming to an end and the unpleasant assonance used in the wind oozing thin through the thorn gives and unpleasant feel to the end of the poem. This stanza shows that Hardy feels he cannot move on because of his memories and the woman calling. This last line completes the eerie sense given in the poem and relates back to the start of the poem, giving the sense that what has happened in this poem keeps on happening to Hardy, and there is nothing he can do to stop it.Beeny Cliff has a strong rhythm and strong rhyme, using the same sounds at the end of each line of each stanza. Beeny Cliff was a special place for Hardy and Emma that they visited together.O at the start of the poem indicates Hardys happiness and excitement as he reminisces about him and Emma. The first line is full of description and imagery, and the opal and the sapphire suggest preciousness and beauty a description of the ocean in the poem, but a description of his wife in Hardys mind. Hardys description of Emma is almost angelic as she is described as the woman riding high above with bright hair flapping free. The alliteration is an onomatopoeia of the wind and the high wind suggests high spirits between Hardy and Emma. Hardy also states that he loved Emma and she loyally loved him, suggesting that, although they both loved each other, she was more faithful than he was. Hardy knows this and is therefore now regretting that he did not make the most of his time with her when she was alive. In the next stanza Hardy concentrates on how when they were together, nothing or no one could touch them. Hardy tells us that birds were plained below them and seemed further away, to show they we re only concentrating on each other and nothing else could distract them. The waves are shown to be what could be a big distraction by the onomatopoeic sibilance of engrossed in saying their ceaseless babbling say, but Hardy and Emma were engrossed in each other thereby showing how close they were at this point in time. They laughed mail-heartedly aloft which reinforces their high spirits and again suggests their height above everything else happening. Pathetic fallacy is also used to show the mood on that clear-sunned parade day. This pathetic fallacy continues throughout the third stanza, as Hardy uses it to show that the mood is changing. A little cloud cloaked them and there was an irised rain, which shows that this trip to Beeny Cliff is like their relationship. These small changes in weather show there are some bad times in the relationship between them, but it is never enough to force them apart and these blips are just a dull disfeatured stain, the same as the cloud is on t he landscape. However, although the sun dampen out again, the cloud was an indication to them that foreshadowed worse things to come, as now purples prinked the main. The at the start of the fourth stanza indicates to the reader that Hardy is going from the past into the present. Hardy tells us that old Beeny is still in all its chasmal beauty. The use of old shows familiarity and Hardy is showing that he is in a familiar place to contrast his unacquainted(predicate) emotions. In addition, this line shows that, although a lot has happened to him, the things and landscape around him are still the same as they used to be huge and gaping but still beautiful. Hardy asks himself with a sense of wistfulness if she and I Hardy could not go there again and repeat the sweet things said in that March. He does not use we, which shows he feels they will never be together again and, although he asks the question, he knows he cannot see her again. The caesura of Nay. at the start of the concludi ng stanza shows Hardy coming back to reality, and answering his own question. He repeats that Beeny has the same chasmal beauty but this time it is a wild weird western shore. This tells us that things around him have stayed the same, but Hardy sees them differently now in a worse light, as this is the effect his wifes death has had on him. Hardy says the woman is nowelsewhere the pauses are showing he doesnt want to say Emma is dead, and he is thinking of a euphemism. She nor knows nor cares for Beeny and has moved on, but Hardy has not and is still stuck in the past. The end of the poem is very final, as if Hardy has eventually made up his mind that she will see it nevermore. In At Castle Boterel, written in March 1913, Hardy again remembers him and his wife together in happier times. Again, a strong sense of rhyme and rhythm appears throughout the poem. Most of the poem is a euphemism for Hardys thoughts, memories, feelings and emotions as he is writing. The poem opens in the prese nt as Hardy gives a description of himself driving through the mizzle in a wagonette to the junction. This suggests he will have to make a decision as to which path he should take, as he does in life to decide whether to move on from thinking about Emma. He looks behind at the fading byway a euphemism for him aspect back into the past. His memories show him with a girlish form Emma in a chaise in dry March weather. Although he is looking into the past, he writes in the present tense, to show how involved he is in his own memory and how he wants it to be real and actually happening. The contrast between the wagonette, a heavy, large vehicle, in which he is driving in the present and the chaise, a small, light vehicle, which he was driving in in the past, is a reference to the happiness he felt then, and the gloom that hangs over him now that Emma is dead. The contrasting pathetic fallacies drizzle and dry March weather further reinforce this point. Hardy describes himself and Emma as we throughout the stanza, which indicates their togetherness.Hardy goes on to tell us that it matters not much what he and Emma talked about on that journey, and he also states it doesnt matter to what it led. This is strange as it surely led to Hardy and Emma falling in love and getting marital and he is now saying that this didnt matter. He continues the point by saying what it led to is something life cannot be balked of, so love is an inevitable part of life. He tells us that it cannot be stopped until something happens so that hope is dead, and feeling fled. This is maybe a sign that Hardy is starting to recover from the death of his wife, and has maybe realised he could have done nothing to stop it.Hardy reveals how much he treasured the moments he had with his wife, by telling us that there was never a time of such quality, since or before, in that hills story. He asks this as a question as if he is challenging anyone to disagree with his view, as he is right. The fact tha t Hardy thinks that this moment is the most important ever to happen on the hill, though it has been climbedby thou gritrocks more tells the reader that he is now extremely focussed on himself and his wife, and cannot think of anything or anyone else but her, showing that the impression he gave in the previous stanza was false. In the next stanza, Hardy states that their passing has been recorded in the colour and cast of the primeval rocks and will now be for always. He feels that although their passing, and therefore their relationship, is only transitory in Earths long order, so only happened for a short time, they have helped to change things happening on the Earth. He thinks these changes will be left behind after he is gone she has gone already. This is a happy moment for Hardy as he thinks about the impact Emma and he had and this is shown through his pause in the middle of the last line, as he reflects on what he is saying. In the penultimate stanza, Hardy comes back into the present and reflects that Times unflinching rigour has taken his wife, and it cannot be stopped, so there is no way of going back once an event has passed. All that is left for him to see is one phantom figure, there is nothing real remaining, only his memories. He feels as if he has left Emma behind and is being forced further and further away from her she is disappearing into the distance.Hardy reverts to the use of I in the final stanza. He looks back and sees the figure shrinking, shrinking. This repetition is like an echo fading away to show that, although he is still having the memories, they are fading away and he will never get them back. He finishes with a great sense of finality that he is now seeing her for the very last time. He says his sand is sinking, this reference to an hourglass meaning his time is nearly up, and he believes that he will soon die as well. The ending is very powerful and final, as Hardy states that heshall traverse old loves domainNever again. His u se of old suggests a familiarity that he has revisited his memories too often, and now wants to move on. The caesura gives the statement a sense of finality so that it stands out as the main fact to come from this poem, that he now has accepted he cannot go back to Emma, and will not let his memories and grief overcome him.The Phantom Horsewoman is written in the voice of a person observing the demeanour of Hardy, in the first person. There is a very regular and repetitive rhyming pattern throughout every stanza, which suggests that Hardys life has become repetitive, as all he does is think about his wife. Now Hardy himself knows he needs to move on but he shows this through an observer. The whole of the first stanza is a euphemism for Hardys thoughts and feelings and how he, Hardy, describes himself as queer which shows he knows the behaviour he is experiencing is not normal to him. He is described as a man I know to show that it is not Hardy talking, but somebody describing his wa ys. Hardy is portrayed as being in a careworn craze, which tells us that the emotions he is feeling have worn him down and are maybe even driving him mad. The next few lines suggest Hardy is looking back but what he sees is unclear. This is shown as he looks at the sands, suggesting time as this is a reference to an hourglass, but there is a seaward haze so his memories are indistinct and vague. The use of moveless hands in reference to a clock show time stands still when he looks into the past. When he turns to go Hardy pauses showing his regret to leave and regret to move back into the present. The use of rhyme in this stanza draws attention to the connected and important ideas stands, sands and hands show the idea of time in reference to an hourglass and a clock and the impression that it stands still when Hardy looks back to the past craze, haze and gaze are also connected, as they show how Hardy is looking back but is shy(p) what to make of what he remembers. The stanza ends wi th the question of what he sees when he gazes so?The second stanza answers the question posed at the end of the first. There is a strong and clear contrast between the haze and indistinctness in the present as shown in stanza I and the clarity and deep description used in stanza II, looking back into Hardys memories of the past. This point is reinforced as we are told what he sees is more clear than today. The description used has a happy and joyous tone because his memories are warm, real and keen. Hardy sets a pleasant scene using a rhythmical tone, as if suggesting the rhythm of the sea. This shows that Hardys memories of the past are happier and he would much preferably be living in the past than in his life now. The sibilance of the sweet soft scene implies the softness of his past life and points to the sound and rhythm of the sea, as does the description of that briny green. The end of the stanza tells us that he sees in his memories a phantom of his own figuring he is rememb ering the past but he knows it is not real now, no matter how much he wants it to be.Hardy then tells us that of this vision they might say more because there is more to him than a man looking at the sea. He sees his wife not only there but he sees her everywhere and all the time as shown by day, night. His memories are vivid and bright as if they were drawn rose-bright on the air and they are all consuming to him as if he is almost pursue by them. At the end of the stanza, Hardy pauses, as if to think, before reiterating the same point again that he has to carry this vision, to make this point clear to the reader. At the start of the final stanza, Hardy describes what this vision is. He tells us he sees a girl-ghost-rider, using a compound word to describe exactly what he sees in his visions. The sounds in the alliteration are happy and soft when Hardy describes Emma, and contrast the harsh sounds Hardy uses to describe himself toil-tried. Hardy also tells us that although he withe rs daily, and is always getting older, time touches her not and she is always the same in his thoughts and memories of her. She still rides gaily in his rapt thought, which shows that his memories of her are when she was happy and free, and that he cannot think of anything else but her. The harsh sounds in the alliteration of shagged and shaly drag him back to reality and back to the sea, which is the idea the whole poem revolves around. The last line of the poem shows that Hardys lasting memory of Emma will be a happy one Emma is singing to the swing of the tide, and that the sea will always be in his memories of her, as it was a special place for them.In conclusion, we can see clearly how Hardy attitude and response to the death of Emma changed over time through his poems. At first he is grieving and mourning her, and wishes he could bring her back he thinks it is his fault that she has died and regrets that their relationship was not as happy as it had been and he wishes he had h ad a chance to say goodbye to her. However, he stops being so overcome by guilt and regret and focuses more on his memories of himself and Emma in happier times such as on Beeny Cliff. The main devices Hardy repeatedly uses are writing the poems sometimes not using himself as the first person and euphemism in place of saying what has actually happened, especially when referring to Emmas death.
